Changing your Gmail password regularly can keep your account safe and secure. Luckily, Google makes it very easy to do so. You'll just need to log into your account's settings with the current password to update it to a new one. If you forgot your password, you can choose to reset it instead. This wikiHow will show you how to change or reset your Gmail account password using your iPhone, iPad, Android, or computer.

Changing Your Gmail Password

  1. Select your profile photo in Gmail.
  2. Select "Manage your Google account."
  3. Select "Personal info" → "Password".
  4. Enter your current password, then enter a new one.

    Open the Gmail app. It’s the white icon with a multicolored "M" inside. You can find it on the home screen or in the App Library. If you aren't already logged in, tap Sign in to do so now.[1]

    • If you don't know your password, reset your password instead.
    • Changing your Gmail password also changes your password in all other Google services, such as Google Drive and Google Photos.

    Tap your profile photo. You can find this in the top-right corner of the screen. If you don't have a profile photo, it'll be your initial instead.

    Tap Manage your Google Account. It's near the top of the window just below your Gmail address.

    Tap the Personal info tab. It's in the upper-left area of the screen.

    Tap Password. This will be underneath the Other info and preferences for Google services header. You may need to scroll to find this.

    Enter your current password and tap Next. Once your current password is validated, you can create a new one.

    Go to https://myaccount.google.com in a web browser. This is the Google sign-in page. If you're already signed in, your account settings will appear. If not, follow the on-screen instructions to sign in now.

    • If you don't know your password, see Resetting a Forgotten Password instead.

    Click Personal info. You can find this in the left panel, underneath Home.

    • If you don't see this option, tap the menu at the top-left corner of the page to expand the options.

    Click Password. This will be in the right panel, underneath the Other info and preferences for Google services header.

    • You'll be able to see the date of when it was last changed.

    Enter your current password and click Next. You must verify your current password before you can change it.

    Enter your new password in both fields. Be sure to create a secure password that you can remember. As you type, you'll see an indicator of your password strength. Aim for a strong password.

    • Make sure to enter the password exactly the same in the New password and Confirm new password boxes.

    Click Change Password. It’s the blue button at the bottom of the form. Your new password will take effect immediately.

    • For best security practices, sign out of Google on all your devices, and then use the new password to log in again.

Resetting a Forgotten Password

    Go to https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery in a web browser. This is Google's account recovery website. You can access this site in any web browser on your computer, phone, or tablet.

    • You can also click Forgot password? on the Google sign-in page.

    Enter your email address and click Next.

    Select Try another way. Since you don't know your password, you'll need to use one of Google's recovery methods.

    • The method of account verification will vary. You'll see instructions on the screen.

    Recover using Gmail app (optional). If you're instructed to use the Gmail app, open it on the requested device. You'll receive a pop-up in the app. Tap Yes, it's me to confirm. On your browser, you should be able to change your password or log in without changing it.

    • If you don't have the device, tap Try another way.

    Recover using a verification code (optional). An email with a verification code will be sent to your listed recovery email. If you don't remember your recovery email, you can find the first three letters of the email above the code field. Find the email in the recovery account, and enter the code. You should now be able to change your password.

    Recover using an SMS text (optional). Google will send a verification code to the phone number connected to your Gmail account. Enter the code into the field, and tap Next. You can now change your password.
