Synopsis[]
- The movie starts with a narration from Hina Setoguchi, the younger sister of the previous movie's male lead Yu Setoguchi, where she reminisces about her relationship with Koyuki Ayase and how he became her first love, transitioning into a flashback to her middle school years. There, we discover she and Koyuki met by chance, as Hina accidentally trips Koyuki when he runs down the hallway trying to empty his waste bin. Frustrated with his apparent clumsiness, Hina demands to know why he wasn't watching where he was going, only for Koyuki to blurt out that he'd caught a glimpse of her panda-print underwear by accident. With Hina enraged more she chases Koyuki down the hall, only to run into Natsuki and learn that he was the latter's classmate -- and more importantly, an upperclassman. Hina apologizes readily when she learns this, but despite finding Koyuki clumsy she begins to sprout feelings for him that she doesn't yet recognize in herself.
- As time goes on throughout the year, Hina finds herself greeting Koyuki often, or else being greeted by him. Arisa takes notice of Kotaro's longing stares and puts her own plan into action; whenever possible, she would put distance between Hina and Koyuki by interacting with the latter, in the hopes that separating the pair would make Hina want to hang out with Kotaro more. The actions only make Hina infuriated, and she begins to see a love rival in Arisa. At one point she becomes so frustrated with her newfound feelings that she runs away to hide, but when Koyuki follows her to check up on her, she finally admits to herself that she is in love with him.
- The scene cuts to graduation day for the third year middle schoolers. Natsuki, Yu, and their childhood friends Haruki and Sota are all privately celebrating together, but Hina decides to see Koyuki off and tell him how much she's going to miss him. They take a last photo together, and Hina decides later that night that she's determined to get into the high school Koyuki entered, no matter what. Kotaro also makes the decision to follow Hina to her chosen high school, revealing that he's so attentive of her because he's been in love with her since they were children. One studying montage later, and both Hina and Kotaro have been accepted into Sakuragaoka High School.
- Opening day allows all the students to wander around and group up with each other. Arisa runs into her favorite celebrity, Sena Narumi, while Hina is introduced to the friends Yu made in high school, in particular classmates Akari Hayasaka and Miou Aida. She later goes off to find Koyuki again, who she discovers is in the Gardening Club and the caretaker for the outdoor plants.
- On one summer day, while visiting Koyuki, she discovers a drastic change: where he was once on his lonesome in his gardening activities, he's now surrounded by adoring girls while he works. A big part of it is his hairstyle change and his seeming attitude change; while Hina is fine with those, she's more irritated by the fact that these girls are only now fawning over Koyuki while she has loved him the whole time. Koyuki still makes an effort to greet her when he sees her, but her growing frustration with his newfound popularity and his closeness with Natsuki makes her run away in tears. Yu catches wind of her being upset at home, and takes her out for a walk to cheer her up. Kotaro happens upon the Setoguchi siblings by chance, in an attempt to check up on Hina and give them back their game, but gets into a spat about which between him and Hina has the bigger sibling complex. Yu is grateful that he went out of his way for his sister, and thanks Kotaro before leaving with her.
- Later on, during break, Kotaro and his friends talk about his standing with Hina. While Kotaro furiously denies ever loving Hina, Ken teases the boy about Hina's attractiveness and seemingly never taking his eyes off of her, while Kodai gives him more practical advice to go at his own pace. After school, Kotaro intended on visiting the Setoguchi household, but changes his mind after seeing Natsuki come out and teasing him. He ruminates on Hina's teary face from the other day, and laments not being able to help her.
- After saying goodbye to Kako, Hina sees Haruki and Miou across the street acting intimate with each other, something she hopes to achieve with Koyuki someday. While walking down the street, Hina runs into Arisa at a local fast food restaurant, and the two reluctantly share a meal with Kotaro's friends. As they're all in their own separate groups, the eating situation is awkward, made worse when Arisa spots an old classmate of hers outside the restaurant window, who has now transferred to another school. Hina distracts her by offering half of her pie, and Arisa feels grateful to have a friend like her. Arisa later snaps at Ken for trying to lighten the mood, seeing him as a vain boy who doesn't take life seriously.
- Some time later, Hina happens upon Miou during a commute to school. Miou and Hina each empathize with each other over being in love with somebody but never gathering enough courage to say it, as well as fearing that what confession they do make will change their relationships with those crushes forever. Miou instead encourages Hina to put those feelings to words, and soon, because what time she has left with the one she loves might not be very much at all. Newly determined, Hina decides to take action by writing Koyuki a love letter that very night, while a montage of what her other Class 1-1 mates are doing at the time occurs; Kotaro exercising, Ken trying not to let Arisa's words get to him while out with girls, Kodai looking at old photos, and Arisa doing her job as a shrine maiden.
- After classes end, Hina waits by the shoe lockers for Koyuki, but when he arrives she discovers he's been crying. Although it is not outright stated, this day is the day when Natsuki made her final practice confession, and it is implied that Koyuki overheard it and understood she began dating Yu. Despite this, Hina finally shouts a confession at him, but he takes it as a gesture of pity for his broken heart. Kotaro meanwhile is encouraged by Arisa to go to Hina, but while he initially rejects doing so he goes anyway. He arrives too late to the rejection, follows Koyuki to the school gates and demands to know why he rejected Hina; Koyuki in turn asks Kotaro if he likes the girl, and if he does, to cherish her and go after her himself. Heeding those words, Kotaro approaches the now bawling Hina and offers to walk her back home. They discuss Hina being unable to give Koyuki the letter, but the topic changes to Kotaro trying out for a starting position on his soccer team. Kotaro invites her to come to his tryout game, and she accepts.
- The credits sequence is a rough outline of how the rest of their relationship developed following this event. Hina begins openly supporting Kotaro at his soccer events, and while she and Kotaro do fight at times she considers him her personal "hero", eventually realizing that she is, in fact, in love with him.
- A stinger will play after the credits. In it, the Enomoto and Setoguchi siblings get tickets to a movie, and decide to watch it together. Kotaro makes a serious confession, telling her he loves her, and Hina replies that she already knows with a smile on her face.

Trivia[]
- In the opening sequence of the movie, Ken and his girl friends are singing the CHiCO with HoneyWorks song "Sekai wa Koi ni Ochiteiru" at karaoke.
- Natsuki and Koyuki are seen looking over the Sekai wa Koi ni Ochiteiru single in one scene.
- In the stinger, the movie the Enomoto and Setoguchi siblings go see is The Anthem of the Heart.
Differences Between Adaptations
- Hina's friend Kako Kogane plays a slightly larger role in the light novel version.
- In HoneyWorks Premium Live, Kotaro confronts Koyuki and walks Hina home from her failed confession just after getting off from soccer practice and in his soccer uniform. The scene changes slightly in the Hina and Kotaro Main Story, where Kotaro is once again in his school uniform when picking up Hina.
- Instead of Hina and Arisa meeting each other near the fast food restaurant by chance before the final confession, Ken invites her to eat with him and his friends a day after she gets rejected.
